TRADITIONAL WEAVER IN TANGAIL & DACCAI (NATIONAL AWARD WINNER)

Profile of Artist:

The Jamdani sari is a symbol of identity, dignity and self recognition and provides weavers with a sense of cultural identity and social cohesion. Goutam’s father was a gold medalist weaver in Bangladesh district of Tangail. The knowledge and skills of traditional Jamdani motifs and weaving techniques was transmitted to his son Goutam. The forefathers of Goutam are into this traditional weaving since more than 250 years. Jamdani textiles combine intricacy of design with muted or vibrant colours on the traditional loom during the process of weaving. According to Goutam Basak Jamdani is a time consuming and labour-intensive form of weaving because of the richness of its motifs, which are created directly on the loom using the discontinuous weft technique.

An extremely fine yarn is used which makes the tangail sari soft and comfortable. Every portion of Tangail sari is weaved and designed by hand and for such excellent master creation Goutam Basak was awarded by prestigious National award.
